Hyde Park Barracks

This project involved the construction of a new glazed lift structure to reach all three levels of the museum, previously accessible by stairs only.

Throughout the project, over 3,600 hours of construction work was carried out, including the assembly of 6.5 tonnes of structural steel. The lift design comprised frameless glass panels with the largest panel being 2.6m by 2.3m and weighing 380kg.

The 14m-high lift shaft utilised 7.5m members with a bolted connection, each weighing over 700kg. These members needed to be craned into position through a door just 1.1m wide, with clearances of just 5mm. The same door had previously been used for all the excavation and underpinning. Significant infrastructure was put in place to protect the 200 year old building.

Various archaeology materials were found amongst our works which is an exciting part of our country’s history. The Gartner Rose site team and subcontractors worked seamlessly and collaboratively with the Client and design team to deliver this prestigious project within the UNESCO World Heritage Listed building.
