St Johns College Stage Two Project Completion

Gartner Rose is delighted to announce the safe and successful completion of the stage two works at St Johns College for the University of Sydney, working with Hector Abrahams Architects to complete the refurbishments, additions and further upgrades to the college.

Over 32 weeks of construction and within a live environment, the residential college maintained operation for the extent of the upgrade. The works to various sections within the college were carefully planned to minimise impact of the on the students living on site throughout the period of the works.

The project saw The Polding Wing undertake renovations and recarpeting to specified bedrooms, including a new attic open area. Additionally, new bedrooms with dormer windows, a common room, bathrooms, a corridor and a kitchenette were constructed with a complete roof renovation.

Level three of the Wardell Wing underwent the development of a new music room, a lounge, Fresher Tutorial room, Archive and a Latin room for students to enjoy.

In addition, The Nagle Library and Philosophical Room were completely restored with the installation of raised platforms in both rooms with new joinery, study areas and a librarian’s office with new lighting and electrical throughout. Furthermore, the ceiling of the Philosophical Room saw 24 karat gold leaf applied to the ceiling while chevron pattern parquetry was laid to the floor.

The college underwent a fire services upgrade including the construction of new fire stairs with the reconfiguration and painting to existing handrails and balustrades were made to be compliant.
Installations were a new EWIS system, new fire detection systems, smoke doors and replacements of all fire doors. Finished with upgrades and replacements to emergency and exit lighting throughout the facility.

All new mechanical services were upgraded and replaced throughout the heritage sections college including the new Polding Attic, common rooms, Library and Philosophical Room, Greek, Tutorial, Latin, Music rooms and level three bedrooms.
