Leura Station Upgrade
The project at Leura Station involved Design and Construct upgrades to improve accessibility. The project saw the construction of a new lift and stairs, a new canopy over the lift, stairs and part of the platform, upgraded toilet facilities, formalised taxi rank, an accessible path from the station to the taxi rank, a new kiss and ride zone, improved bicycle facilities, lighting and CCTV security surveillance.
Access to Leura Station was via a single set of stairs to an island platform. The only location for the new lift was through the existing stairs. The concept design included for a temporary footbridge and stairs to be constructed in the middle of the platform. Gartner Rose identified several challenges and redesigned a temporary platform access solution using cantilevered footbridges around the site of the new lift, prefabricated to allow for quick installation and removal, but at a height that allowed the works to be constructed underneath, except during possessions.
This brought a massive benefit to the local community, with many compliments being passed to Sydney Trains. It also allowed one fewer possession to be utilised, minimising impact on the community and the network.
